Understanding Group Dental Coverage

The 100/80/50 Rule

Most group dental plans follow a tiered structure. Preventive care (cleanings, exams, x-rays) is covered at 100%. Basic care (fillings, simple extractions) at 80%. Major care (crowns, root canals, dentures) at 50% after deductible. Group plans often have higher annual maximums and lower or no waiting periods compared to individual plans.

PPO vs. DHMO

A dental PPO lets employees use any licensed dentist, with better cost-sharing for in-network providers. A DHMO (dental HMO) requires employees to select a primary dentist within a closed network — typically lower premiums but less flexibility. Most Louisiana employers choose PPO for the provider freedom it offers employees.

Employer vs. Voluntary

Employer-paid: You cover 100% of the employee premium. Contributory: You split the cost with employees via payroll deduction. Voluntary: Employees pay 100% — you facilitate enrollment and payroll deduction. All three models qualify for group rates. Even voluntary dental saves employees money compared to buying individual coverage.

Understanding Group Vision Coverage

What Group Vision Covers

  • Annual comprehensive eye exam
  • Frames allowance ($130–$200 per year on most plans)
  • Prescription lenses (single vision, bifocal, progressive)
  • Contact lens allowance (in lieu of glasses)
  • Lens enhancements (anti-reflective, photochromic, UV coating)
  • Discounts on additional pairs and LASIK

Most vision plans cost $5–$12/month per employee — one of the highest-perceived-value benefits you can offer for the price.

Bundle Dental + Vision and Save

Most carriers offer a discount of 5–15% when you bundle dental and vision under a single group plan. Beyond the savings, bundling simplifies enrollment, billing, and administration — one carrier, one invoice, one renewal date.

We'll show you the bundled vs. separate pricing side-by-side so you can make the best decision for your group.
